New Echota, GA - A Virtual TourSwamp Photo #1![]() Why are we looking at a swamp? I think it helps to understand why the lands of the Cherokee were so important. They were using all of the "workable" land in the area, which later led to the theft of their properties. No one wanted the swamps and mountains which surrounded the lands of the Cherokee. At least, not until gold was discovered on them. When I came upon this swamp, I was amazed at the balance of nature! I didn't get a single mosquito bite the whole day in the swamp, yet upon returning to Atlanta they would just eat me up. Because of the virgin forest and lands, nature was completely balanced into a delicate ecosystem.

"The time will come... when the few remnants of our once happy and improving Nation will be viewed by posterity with curious and gazing interest as relics of a brave and noble race... Perhaps, only here and there a solitary being, walking, 'as a ghost over the ashes of his fathers,' to remind a stranger that such a race once existed."
-- Elias Boudinot - November 25th, 1836
