Does pride equal racism? It depends.

Someone just asked me a very good question: Does pride of your heritage make you a racist?

My answer is, "It depends."

I believe the defining factor of racism is the attitude of elitism / superiority.

As a personal example, I am very proud of my Cherokee tribe and ancestors. I want to learn everything to know about my heritage, and I want to help preserve it for future generations. I don't consider that being a racist.

In the context of this weeks "debate" between Cherokees, I think many of the remarks made are very clearly racist. Why? It is the assertion by some tribal members that anyone who isn't in their tribe is a "fake, fraud, or wannabe." To me, that statement indicates their belief that they are superior to others.

I love and accept EVERYBODY. At least until someone gives me a reason not to respect them. I also usually trust people until I have a reason not to trust them. The more I travel and meet people, the more I realize that we are all pretty much the same.

My hope is that one day our nation (and the world) will forget about the divisions between us and view everyone as equal. We should always remember where we came from, but at the same time realize the bonds between us. We are Americans and THAT is what makes us special.
