Obama pledges (again) to end Don't Ask, Don't Tell

Wednesday, July 1st, 2009

My legal challenge to the military policy is pending legal action, so I am not allowed to discuss any details. My legal team says the decision is expected to be favorable, but I will pursue it to the Supreme Court, if necessary.

As soon as my case is over, every single detail of my story will be published at DontAskDontTellDontWork.com where I will clearly demonstrate the true cost of this failed policy.

On Monday, the White House held a celebration commemorating Gay Pride Month (June) and the 40th anniversary of the Stonewall riots. At the event, President Obama recommitted himself to fighting for LGBT rights during his administration.

The President says he is working to end the law, and announced that he's working with defense leaders to determine the best way forward in implementing repeal.

"Even as we face extraordinary challenges as a nation, we cannot ? and will not ? put aside issues of basic equality. We seek an America in which no one feels the pain of discrimination based on who you are or who you love."

"[A]s commander-in-chief in a time of war, I do have to a responsibility to make sure that this change is administered in a practical way and a way that takes over the long term," he said. "That's why I asked the secretary of defense and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff to develop a plan on how to thoroughly implement repeal."

"Preventing patriotic Americans from serving their country weakens our national security" and he's "confident we'll look back at this transition and ask why it generated such angst."

He also recommitted himself to a legislative repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act, and reiterated his endorsement of hate crimes legislation, the Employment Non-Discrimination Act and the Domestic Partner Benefits & Obligations Act.

Mr. President - You keep making these promises, now let's see you put them in action!

"If ever we find ourselves with nothing in common, let us start by remembering that we all look up at the exact same moon. Our common ground is right there in the sky. Let's start at the moon, and then work our way back down to earth."
