Dr. Holsinger is NOT fit for service as Surgeon GeneralMonday, June 11, 2007The following text is from a letter I just sent to my Senators: I was shocked by Dr. James Holsinger's nomination to the position of Surgeon General! Dr. Holsinger's past writings suggest a view that could not be further from the position held by mainstream medical or scientific organizations. Dr. Holsinger and his wife were founders of Hope Springs Community Church which believes it can "cure gay people" from their "lifestyle choice." This form of "conversion therapy" has been condemned by almost every major, reputable medical organization (including the American Psychological Association which issued a condemnation over ten years ago). Simply, Dr. Holsinger is not fit for service as our Surgeon General. Regardless of your opinion on sexual orientation, Holsinger's views are based on his personal beliefs and not based on any scientific evidence. With all of the health dangers facing Americans right now (AIDS/HIV, West Nile Virus, cancer, heart disease, and obesity) our country can not afford to lose it's strong leadership position of our Surgeon General. I urge you and your colleagues to examine Holsinger's record closely, and to VOTE NO on his confirmation. |
