Corpse Flower Blooms in NY

Saturday, August 12, 2006

On Thursday at 2PM EST the "corpse flower" came into bloom at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. This was the first time it has bloomed in 67 years.

The flower gives off an awful smell, which earned it the nickname of the "Corpse Flower."

The official name of the plant is odoriferous Amorphophallus titanum and is native only to Sumatra.

In addition to the unique smell, this plant can exhibit enormous growth spurts. It tops out around nine feet tall, but it can grow over seven inches in a single day.

Because the plant is so rare, to see it is truly a once in a lifetime experience.

"If ever we find ourselves with nothing in common, let us start by remembering that we all look up at the exact same moon. Our common ground is right there in the sky. Let's start at the moon, and then work our way back down to earth."
