US Supreme Court rules against Bush holding "Gitmo" trials

Thursday, June 29, 2006

I applaud the United States Supreme Court ruling (vote was 5-3) that the President Bush program to try detainees at Guantanamo Bay is illegal.

The ruling stated that the military commission rules do not guarantee an independent trial court, do not provide for an impartial appellate review, and do not prohibit the use of coerced testimony (despite extensive evidence that coercive interrogation techniques have been used at Guantanamo Bay and elsewhere).

Earlier this week, Europe decided to stop participation in the US "rendition to torture" program. The United States government is snatching up people around the world and sending them to places around the world where they are tortured and denied fair treatment under law.

Today's decision from the Supreme Court was a large first step in correcting a government that is out of control. If our system of law works, then we should honor our own laws when we travel abroad. These government programs were a conspiracy to bypass the laws of our land, and they are being brought to light to be corrected.
